And Iraq’s people and the government stood united and welcomed His Holiness, the Pope Francis, on all his tours in Baghdad, Najaf, Nasiriyah, Erbil, Nineveh and its plain. The Iraqi minorities had a strong presence in his visit and in his words that carried messages of reassurance and encouragement to hold on to the land and he mentioned what minorities suffered under the circumstances they went through in terms of killing, displacement, exclusion and marginalization, drawing the attention of the government and the world to their suffering on their land and their urgent need to support them to survive and preserve diversity in Iraq and to create Protection mechanisms for this at the legislative, executive and social levels.
Also, His visit to the Najaf and his meeting with Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the supreme authority of the Shie Muslims, had a great impact on the souls of Iraqi people from all sects, considering this historic meeting represented the human brotherhood and interfaith dialogue, and his visit to the historic city of Ur and the meeting with religions together was an expression of human partnership, acceptance of the other and coexistence.
In Erbil, political leaders and religion man welcomed the Pop Francis, as well as the crowd who expressed their direct contribution to confronting hate speech and focusing on the aesthetic diversity. The presence of His Holiness in Nineveh, specifically Mosul, and his sitting among the rubble of the stricken city and his call to its people who left it to return to it and mentioned in his words what minorities suffered from ISIS gangs may effectively contribute to overcoming obstacles to the safe return of them by the residents of Mosul ,He also gave another very important message that despite the circumstances That which they have passed over the past few years, they are still clinging to their brothers who were forced to abandon them.
And the Nineveh Plain embraced His Holiness with all it spectrums and as a historical land of minorities, his visit was a clear message to contribute preserving their historical presence and their coexistence with each other and with all components of the Iraqi people.
In our role as the Alliance of Iraqi Minorities network, we thank His Holiness the Pope for his visit to Iraq and for attaching great importance to minorities in this visit through his words and tours, as well as his activities, in which we had the honor as an Alliance for a group of our colleagues to participate in it.
We also thank him for the moral support he provided to preserve the survival of minorities in Iraq, as well as his calls for tolerance, coexistence and acceptance of others. To invest this historic visit, we call on all parties to implement their national and moral obligations and to invest in the dimensions of this historic visit to implement the protection mechanisms related to minority communities and the safe return to their lands, especially since the Alliance of Iraqi Minorities network has drawn the way for many of the relevant programs and activities.
